Jeju chosen to host global environment congress in 2012

GENEVA, Nov. 26 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean resort island of Jeju has been
selected as the host of the fifth conference of the World Conservation Congress
(WCC) in 2012, the environmental policy body said Thursday.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), founded in 1948 to
promote environmental protection worldwide, announced the decision to pick Jeju
as the venue of the 2012 WCC conference during a board meeting at its
headquarters in Gland, Switzerland.
The Korean island nudged Mexico's Cancun in the competition for hosting the event.
The 10-day WCC conference, dubbed the "environmental Olympics," is expected to
draw about 10,000 participants from 1,100 affiliated organizations in 160 member
countries around the world.
