Doosan DST rolls out latest infantry fight vehicle
SEOUL, Nov. 27 (Yonhap) -- Doosan DST Co., a South Korean defense equipment
manufacturer, said Thursday that it has rolled out its latest infantry vehicle
with anti-helicopter capabilities.
Co-developed together with South Korea's army and other defense firms, the 25-ton
infantry fight vehicle K-21 is equipped with a 40-millimeter automatic cannon and
a 7.62-millimeter machine gun. The armored vehicle has superb river-crossing
ability, can carry three crew members and a squad of nine soldiers.
It is capable of speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour on the ground and 7.8
kilometers per hour in water, according to Doosan DST. Development of the vehicle
began in 1999.
The K-21 provides greatly improved protection for the crew, as its lasers and
heat sensors can detect an imminent enemy attack and can provide
counter-helicopter capabilities, it said.
Doosan DST was spun off earlier this year from Doosan Infracore Co., South
Korea's leading construction equipment maker.
