Chidambaram's statements don't match actions: Jaitley

MAOIST-JAITLEY

Ranchi, Nov 29 (PTI) India's Home Minister P
Chidambaram's strong statements against Maoists are not
reflected on the ground and the Indian government has failed
to curb the menace, leader of opposition Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) Arun Jaitley said Sunday.

"I have followed Chidambaramji's statements during the
last three/four months ... But action don't reflect on the
ground ... Naxalism has increased in the last five years,"
Jaitely told a news conference here.
"Though the Centre has run out of ideas to control
Maoists, it objects when states come up with strategies to
deal with it. Chhattisgarh is one such example," he said.
"About 170 districts are in the grip of Maoists. Only a
coherent, credible and strong government can tackle the
problem. And the NDA has a track record," Jaitley claimed.
He, however, appeared to be at a loss of words when
reminded about chief minister of Chattisgarh in central India
Raman Singh's recent appreciation of Chidamabaram's efforts to
deal with the ultra Left.
Suggesting that economic development combined with
effective security measures could bring down the Maoist
problem, the BJP leader blamed the Centre for its
"inconsistent" views on the issue.
"Sometimes the government says it is a socio-economic
problem and then comes up with a statement on setting up of
special forces to deal with the problem," he said. PTI PVR
