Korea Electric Power to develop core HVDC technologies
By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Yonhap) -- Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), South Korea's
state power company, said Monday it will join forces with three local companies
to develop core technologies for a high-end electric power transmission system.
The system, called a high-voltage direct current (HVDC), is less expensive and
loses less power when distributing energy over long distances.
Later in the day, KEPCO will sign a preliminary deal for the project with two
electric cable makers -- Taihan Electric Wire Co. and LS Cable Ltd. -- and LS
Industrial System Co, a leading manufacturer of transformers.
KEPCO predicts that the global HVDC market will increase to 23 trillion won
(US$19.8 billion) in 2019.
