TOKYO, November 30 (Itar-Tass) - The leaders of Russia and Japan
maintained open constructive relationship, Russian presidential chief of
staff Sergei Naryshkin said.
After the meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on
Monday, Naryshkin told Itar-Tass that the leaders of the two countries
intended to continue talks on a peace treaty, including border
delimitation.
"I can say the leaders of the two countries maintained open
constructive relationship. Both Russia and Japan show interest in it,"
Naryshkin said.
He recalled that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the Japanese
premier had met twice - in New York and in Singapore. "Premier Hatoyama
seeks to discuss the existing issues with President Medvedev. He would
like to continue the dialogue," Naryshkin said.
"Maybe, a new meeting will be held in Copenhagen shortly. Of course,
it will focus on the development of our relations, including on the peace
treaty and border delimitation," the Russian presidential chief of staff
said.
Hatoyama has a balanced approach towards a peace treaty with Russia
and seeks to develop a dialogue with Russia on this delicate and difficult
problem, Naryshkin said. "We discussed a wide range of issues related to
bilateral political, economic and humanitarian cooperation. The talks on a
peace treaty were not overlooked."
"Prime Minister Hatoyama has a balanced approach towards this issue
and he is ready to develop a dialogue on such delicate and complex
problem. It is natural that we are interested in continuing discussions,"
Naryshkin said.
"We informed Japan by different channels that the problem can be only
solved within the legal framework. It is necessary to hold the dialogue in
a calm atmosphere," the Russian presidential chief of staff said.
