BI REVISES TARGET OF CREDIT GROWTH TO 15-17 PCT

Jakarta, Nov 30(ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) revised its target of credit growth for 2010 down from 20 percent to 15-17 percent.

"The credit growth in 2010 will be better than in 2009 but will not be higher than in 2008, predictably only between 11 and 17 percent," Central Bank Governor Darmin Nasution said at a seminar here on Monday.

He said the target was revised on the basis of the slow growth of credits in 2009 which was projected at only five to seven percent.

He said until November 2009 national bank credits had dropped to 5.6 percent (year to date) compared with October`s level of six percent.

In 2009 the growth of credits is stagnant as a result of the global crisis that had caused trade credits to drop but demand for credits in the telecommunications, infrastructure and agricultural sectors remained high, he said.

This year`s bank liquidity is still quite good as the capital adequacy ratio rose from 17 percent in September to 17.7 percent in November, he said.

Next year BI will continue to maintain and direct its national banks to keep increasing efficiency and promoting their intermediary function, he said.

He said the challenges would be bigger in the future in line with the global economic recovery.

C Harinowo, commissioner of PT Unilever Indonesia meanwhile said on the occasion that banking prospects in 2010 would be brighter driven by the country`s economic growth which is expected to reach 5.5 percent.

The chairman of the Indonesian Banking Association, Sigit Pramono, said economic growth would require around Rp300 trillion worth of investment.

"The banking sector could contribute around 12 percent to meet the economic growth target," he said.

Sigit emphasized the importance of securing legal certainty and policies that would support the real sector with regard to meeting the target.***2***
