E JAVA IMPORTS 525 PREGNANT DAIRY COWS FROM AUSTRALIA

Surabaya, E Java, Nov 30 (ANTARA) - East Java imported a total of 525 pregnant dairy cows from Australia in a bid to improve the quality and milk production in the province, an animal husbandry official said.

"The ability of local dairy cow farmers to produce milk only reaches 95 tons per day, whereas the province needs as much as 550 tons per day," head of the provincial Animal Health Husbandry office, Drh. Irawan Subiyanto said here on Monday.

In addition, the national level of dairy cows farmers ability to produce milk compared to the international level is still very far away, namely three proportionate seven, he said.

By importing the dairy cows the local dairy cow farmers are expected to meet the market demand by producing 550 tons of milk per day.

The cows purchase program was carried through a grant obtained from the East Java Governor, Soekarwo amounting US$15 billion, and it was the second time of its kind, he said.

Several years ago, under the administration of former Governor Imam Utomo, East Java had also imported male cows mated with the local female cows, he added.
