DEMAND FOR RATTAN EXPORTS DOWN
Banjarmasin, Nov 30 (ANTARA) - Overseas demand for rattan-based handicraft products is showing a continuous decline, a local industry official said.
Head of the Industrial and Trade Office of South Kalimantan, Soebadjo said here on Monday producers were now feeling the pinch of reduced demand for rattan-based handicraft products.
He said it was suspected that the decline in demand for rattan-based handicraft products was because the commodity could not compete with mineral products.
Demand for rattan products only accounted for about 30 percent while the remaining 70 percent of the export demand was for other kinds of products, he said.
"Actually, we are not defeated in the competition but importing countries prefer to produce their own products so that demand for raw materials is on the rise," he said.
Soebardjo said that South Kalimantan`s rattan product exports in the January-August 2009 period dropped 16 percent if compared with the same period a year earlier.
The value of the exports also dropped from 5.5 million US dollars to 5 million dollars, or about 5 percent.
South Kalimantan so far exported among others round rattan (cultured type) and semi-finished rattan. Good quality round rattan with larger diameter and produced in the forest cannot be exported.
