VATICAN SPECIAL ENVOY MEETS WITH SULTAN OF YOGYAKARTA

Yogyakarta, Nov 30 (ANTARA) - Vatican special envoy Cardinal Jean Louis Taurant met with Sultan Hamengku Buwono X of Yogyakarta on his visit to the Central Javanese town on Monday.

Cardinal Taurant was flanked by Vatican ambassador to Indonesia Leopoldo Girelly and Indonesian ambassador to Vatican Suprapto Marto Setomo while Sultan Hamengku Buwono was in the company of palace chief official GBPH Hadiwinoto, the provincial administration secretary Tri Harjun Ismaji and head of the regional capital investment coordinating board, Nur Syahrir Rahardjo.

After the meeting Suprapto said the visit was important because Cardinal Taurant is the president of the Pope`s Council for Inter-religious Dialogue who considers Indonesia as very active in inter-religious dialogues.

By the visit he said Cardinal Taurant could see the harmonious relationship between different religious followers in the region.

Besides for a pastoral visit Cardinal Taurant had also come here to open a dialogue with various parties and take a close look at the relations among the different religious followers in the country.

Nur Syahrir meanwhile said that during the meeting, Sultan Hamengku Buwono had explained about the relationship between different religious followers in Yogyakarta which remained harmonious.

"Although they follow different religious creeds, they all live in peaceful harmony. In view of that Sultan has suggested that Cardinal Taurant makes Yogyakarta a reference for the world`s inter-religious relationship," he said.
