GOVT TO HELP WOMEN-LED SMEs WITH LOANS
Jakarta, Nov 30 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) run by women with loans.
"Small, medium and creative enterprises run by women rarely fail, are very efficient, corruption-free and well-managed," said the president here on Monday during the 10th anniversary of the National Commission for Women.
The president also expressed his appreciation for Indonesian women who were working in various sectors of national life such as environmental preservation, social services and in non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
On the same occasion, president Yudhoyono received a report from the commission on violence experienced by Indonesian women during the past four decades.
The president promised to pay attention to the report and solve the past cases in a fair way.
"The report is a reflection of the just and open investigations of the violence that happened to Indonesian women. Hopefully there will be no more violence in the future and the government can bring justice to all parties," said the president.
Meanwhile, the head of the National Commission for Women, Kamala Chandrakirana, suggested several steps for the government to support women in Indonesia, namely issuing policies which would empower women regardless of their race, class, faith or political persuasion.
Kamala also asked the government to review all state policies containing elements that harm women`s rights. Other recommendations to the president were the inclusion of women`s contributions to the country`s history in the form of teaching in schools and written texts.
Kemala stated she was optimistic that women`s leadership would be a meaningful asset in the process of Indonesia`s democratization and prosperity in the future.
The 10th anniversary of National Commission for Women was also attended by tens of women who became victim of various conflicts in Indonesia over the past four decades such as the 1965 conflict, the May 1998 riots and armed conflicts in several parts of Indonesia such as in Aceh, Poso, Papau and Maluku.
Also attending the occasion were human rights activists from 14 countries in the Asian region and representatives from the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights centered in Geneve, Switzerland.
Former president BJ Habibie and his wife Ainun Habibie as the founder of the commission were also on hand at the event. ***2***
