In supportive regime, India ready to do more on climate: Saran
New Delhi, Nov 30 (PTI) Ahead of the climate change talks
in Copenhagen, India Monday said it was willing to take
greater steps to tackle the challenge posed by global warming
provided there was a more supportive global regime.
India also made it clear that it was not in a position to
take legally binding emission cuts but has already embarked on
an enhanced energy efficiency mission which could reduce the
carbon intensity of its rapid growth.
Speaking at a seminar here, Indian Prime Minister's
Special Envoy on Climate Change Shyam Saran said contrary to
the developed countries, India has already began unconditional
implementation of its action plan to tackle global warming.
"Developed countries are making their actions conditional
on what others are doing. We have national action plan whose
implementation is not conditional on anyone giving us a penny,
including technological aspects," he said.
Saran said India can do more if there was a supportive
global regime in place.
On the Copenhagen talks, he said it was unlikely to have
a full-fledged legal outcome on emission reduction at the end
of the negotiations, which are expected to continue at least
for a few more months next year.
"At present what we are really negotiating is not how to
deal with the climate change, but how we preserve our economic
positions and how do we cap trade and promote some of our
economic interest," Saran said. PTI
