St Petersburg drawbridges moved apart last time this year.
ST PETERSBURG, December 1 (Itar-Tass) - This year's last moving-apart
of this city's drawbridges is carried out on the night from Monday to
Tuesday, Yuri Petrov, director of the state unitary enterprise Mostotrest
(bridge maintenance organisation), has told Itar-Tass.
During the 2009 navigation, over 4,500 ships of various purpose and
tonnage have passed both upstream and downstream through the Neva River,
the most important element the North-West's largest Volga-Baltic transit
waterway.
Within the next five months, specialists are to carry out preventive
maintenance of the mechanisms, systems, and river crossing control
equipment of all the drawbridges.
About 600 bridges, including 12 movable ones that are capable of
letting large-tonnage ships pass through, are currently thrown across the
city's rivers, canals, and channels.
