TECTONIC EARTHQUAKE JOLTS BENGKULU
Bandarlampung, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu at 6:15 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
Local Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 km under sea level 106 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu, 120 kilometers southwest of Padangbetuah, and 128 kilometers southwest of Lai-Bengkulu.
Since Bengkulu is an earthquake-prone area in Indonesia, the provincial office of transportation, communication and information
(Dishubkominfo) has installed two quake and tsunami detection systems in the province.
The Bengkulu regional Dishubkominfo head Budi Jatmiko said in Bengkulu recently that the two systems were set up in cooperation with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) headoffice.
"There are two systems. One was set up at the provincial office of Dishubkominfo and the other at the BMKG station in Kepahing district," Budi Jatmiko said.
He said BMKG would help operate the two earthquake and tsunami detection apparatuses.
Budi said the systems , donated by South Korea, were capable to detect not only an earthquake and an ensuing tsunami in Bengkulu but also in other parts of Indonesia.
"The systems have been installed and we are waiting for their operation because they can detect an earthquake that will happen anywhere across the country," Budi said.
He added that the systems would also be connected with all cellular telephone providers so , whenever an earthquake happened, it would be automatically and promptly be notified to all providers.
Budi expressed hope that with the installation of the two systems, information of an earthquake and tsunami would be disseminated as quickly and effectively as possible.
Bengkulu`s disaster management board (BPBD) had earlier installed two Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (TEWS) sirens in an effort to reduce the risk of disasters in the province.
