S. Korean diplomat picked as vice chairman of OPCW meeting

SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Yonhap) -- A senior South Korean diplomat has been selected as vice chairman of the annual conference of an international agency tasked with curbing the spread of chemical weapons, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Ambassador to the Netherlands Kim Young-won was picked to assume the post for a
year at the 14th Conference of the States Parties of the Organization for the
Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) held at the organization's headquarters in
The Hague on Monday (local time), it added.
Kim has served as South Korea's permanent ambassador to the 188-nation OPCW aimed
at promoting membership of the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention treaty for the
elimination of "the scourge of chemical weapons forever."
"With the election of Amb. Kim, the role of the South Korean government in the
international disarmament fields including chemical weapons is expected to be
further enhanced," the ministry said in a press release.
