Samsung starts producing latest NAND chips

SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of
computer memory chips, said Tuesday it has started mass production of its latest
and fastest NAND flash memory chips.
A NAND chip is a non-volatile computer memory that can be electrically erased and
reprogrammed, primarily used in memory cards and drives for general storage and
transfer of data between computers and other digital products.
The company began producing its 3-bit multi-level-cell(MLC) NAND chip at the end
of November, based on its 30-nanometer technology. A nanometer is one-billionth
of a meter.
"Our 3-bit NAND memory will support the development of more cost-competitive,
high-density consumer electronics storage solutions," said Cho Soo-in, executive
vice president and general manager of the memory division at Samsung Electronics.
The company expects the new product will lower power consumption to 50 percent of
that for 2-bit MLC NAND chips.
The technology will also improve productivity, as each NAND chip will take up a
smaller space on the production line, a Samsung official said.
