News Focus: RI HAJJ PILGRIMS BEGIN RETURNING FROM HOLY LAND
By Bustanuddin.
Jeddah, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - After performing the last rite in the Hajj pilgrimage or the "Tawaf Ifadlah" by circling the Kabaa shrine in Mecca, the first group of Indonesians who have completed the pilgrimage is expected to return home on Wednesday.
Prior to conducting the Tawaf Ifadlah, they did the "jumrah" the throwing pebbles onto stone walls in Mina, a desert valley outside Mecca, about six kilometers from the Haram grand mosque in Mecca.
Casting pebbles to the stone walls representing the devil, is another important ritual in the hajj pilgrimage.
As many as 5,760 hajj pilgrims divided into 14 flight groups will leave King Abdul Aziz International airport in Jeddah on Wednesday for home on the first day of the hajj pilgrims return flow.
The hajj pilgrims will proceed to Jakarta, Surabaya, Solo, Banjarmasin, Makassar and Batam, Antara learned here on Tuesday.
The pilgrims who will be flown to Jakarta amounting to 1,350 people, Surabaya (1,355), Solo (1,140), Medan (455), Balikpapan (325), Banjarmasin (325), Makassar (360), and Batam (450).
Before leaving the airport, the pilgrims from Mecca would spend the night in several transit hotels in Jeddah, namely Araq Hotel, Rumasiah Hotel, Tayyar Hotel, Sama Hotel, including the Rotana Norcom Hotel.
During their transit in Jeddah, they were slated to visit the tomb of Eve, Qisas Mosque, Floating Mosque in the Red Sea and the largest shopping center in Jeddah, Qorniche Market.
The congregation were also reminded not to take things too much, also prohibited to carry Zamzam water, because it was rationed and will be provided at the arrival airports in Indonesia.
The total number of Indonesians who performed the hajj pilgrimage this year is 196,100. They were flown from 11 embarkation airports in the country in 475 groups since October 23.
The annual Islamic pilgrimage draws about three million Muslims each year.
In the meantime, until Monday (Nov 30) a total of 130 Indonesian pilgrims died during their journey of worship in the Holy Land after suffering from heart disease, respiratory failure and brain hemorrhage.
On Sunday (Dec 29) or three days after the Idul Adha 1430 Hijra, millions of hajj pilgrims moved from the Haram grand mosque in Mecca to Mina for the "jumrah" rite or otherwise to carry out the hajj ritual processions.
The hajj congregation moved in waves towards the
locations of worship on foot, either in groups, as families
or alone.
Many of the pilgrims prefer to make the on-hour walk from the Haram grand mosque to Mina as it is faster than getting on vehicles which mostly get trapped in traffic jams.
Meanwhile, aged or sick hajj pilgrims make the trip in wheel chairs or take a motorcycle taxi at a tariff of between 50 and 100 Saudi Rials (SR1 = Rp2.500) for the ritual performance.
The non-tariff vehicles charge a much higher rate than on other days, namely SR30 for sitting passenger and SR20 for passenger who are willing to ride on the roof of the vehicles, whereas the normal rate is only SR5 for individuals.
The passengers using vehicles did not reach the location of Jamarat or the stone walls, because passengers should get out of the vehicles about one or two kilometers before arriving at the Jamarat.
Those who perform the Nafar Awal or brief ritual of hajj in Mina, must cast 49 pebbles to the Jamarat (three stone walls) namely Jumrah Ula, Wusta and Aqabah.
On the first day of casting the pebbles on Friday (Dec 27) the pilgrims have to cast 28 pebbles. Early Friday after returning from the Arafah plain (the peak of Hajj rites), the pilgrims throw seven pebbles and then proceed to the Haram grand mosque for more rites.
At the grand mosque, the congregation perform the ritual of the pilgrimage like Tawaf (circling the Kaaba seven times) and Sa'i (jog between Mount Safa and Marwah).
After that they return to Mina to cast 21 pebbles to the three Jamarat (seven pebbles for each Jumrah).
On the second day (Saturday) the pilgrims again cast 21 pebbles at the three Jamaraat.
Pilgrims who perform the Nafar Sani continue casting pebbles until Sunday or the third day (throwing 21 more pebbles) until they thrown a total of 70 pebbels.
The pilgrims can choose either the Nafar Awal or Nafar Sani. Part of them leave for home after performing the Nafar Awal.
Those belong to the second part of the major groups of departure with 223 air travel groups comprising 90,500 pilgrims who departed since November 7 to Jeddah King Abdul Azis Airport, who directly proceeded to Mecca by land, will visit Medina to perform the "Arbain" (40 times of doing prayers in the Nabawi mosque) before returning home.
During this year`s hajj season, Indonesian pilgrims again had to be patient especially in facing two crucial problems, namely transportation and housing in Mecca.
Recently, head of the country`s hajj organizing committee in Mecca, Subakin AM, said the Muassasah (pilgrimage service managers) had deployed 325 buses to transport all the Indonesian hajj pilgrims from their houses to all points of the hajj ritual including to the Arafat.
It was reported that the Indonesia`s hajj organizing committee or PPIH in 1430-H hajj season had rented 407 houses in 11 sectors in Mecca for a total of 196,100 would-be hajj pilgrims (the regular PPIH program).
As many as 115 houses for some 52,500 people (26,4 percent) located in the so-called "Ring 1" (about two kilometers "Haram" grand mosque).
In addition, 292 houses for l43,600 people (73,6 percent) located in the "Ring 2" (seven kilometers from the grand mosque).
Actually, in normal circumstances, the vehicles only take about half an hour from the grand mosque to the houses in the Ring-2 location (seven kilometers from the grand mosque), but when three million Muslims from all over the world gathered in the holy city of Mecca, the travel time becomes difficult to predict.
In response to housing and transportation problem, Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said in Jeddah recently that his office will make an evaluation and improvement on the discomfort of accommodation (houses) and transportation for the hajj pilgrims.
Regarding the shuttle buses problem, the hajj pilgrims always expressed complaint about the Muassasah because the bus drivers did not keep the schedule.
In the meantime, the monitoring team led by Commission VIII chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR), Gondo Radityo Gambiro (From Democratic Party) expressed dissatisfaction about the service given by the PPHI to the would be hajj pilgrims and threatened to form an investigative team, especially on the provision of lodging and transportation services in Mecca.
Minister Suryadharma Ali also expressed his commitment that next year his office is striving to provide lodging for the country`s would-be hajj pilgrims at the most distant four kilometers from the Haram grand mosque. ***4***
