News Focus: PRESIDENT SATISFIED ABOUT RI-CHINA STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
By Eliswan Azly
Jakarta, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - The progress achieved by Indonesia and China in implementing their strategic partnership accord in various fields has attracted the attention of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who eventually said he was satisfied about it.
Yudhoyono expressed his satisfaction at a meeting with a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s political bureau, Liu Qi, in the accompany of CPC deputy minister for international department Li Jinjun and Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Zhang Qiyue, presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said here on Tuesday.
The strategic partnership with China was an important pillar for stability in the Asia Pacific region, Djalal further said.
Liu Qi, during the meeting, also expressed the Communist Party of China`s hope it could forge close cooperation with political parties in Indonesia, Djalal said, adding the CPC also invited political parties in Indonesia to attend a seminar in China in 2010 to observe the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The Chinese delegate also expressed optimism that the value of Indonesia-China trade would exceed US$30 billion next year as the figure was already reached in 2008 and President Yudhoyono was optimistic enough to set its new target for trade with China at US$50 billion for the next five years.
With serious efforts and support from the two countries` governments, and the cooperation of private sectors between the two countries, the target of US$50 billion in the bilateral trade value for the next five years would be reached, Djalal said.
"The target of US$30 billion in 2010 was already reached in 2008 or two years earlier than expected, and this reflects the extraordinary dynamics of the trade and investment relations between the two countries," he quoted the president as saying.
The Indonesian and Chinese economies, according to Djalal, were predicted to grow well in the future and therefore the new target for trade between the two countries would be increased.
As a matter of fact, Yudhoyono on the sidelines of meetings of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit recently said Indonesia and China had actually agreed to continue formulating an action plan for the implementation of their strategic partnership accord, Djalal said.
"The Chinese government is willing to continue intensifying the strategic partnership initiated by President Yudhoyono some years ago, now reaching the stage of formulating its plan of action," he said.
"The essence is that at their meeting the two leaders agreed to continue maintaining the strategic partnership and finishing the action plan for it," he said.
The two leaders also agreed to boost the two countries` political relations, mutual trust and coordination with regard to multilateral and international issues. They also agreed to increase the two countries` economic cooperation.
In the meantime, the Chinese government also hoped Indonesia could play a bigger role in the international forum. The strategic partnership agreement serves as an umbrella that regulates process of cooperation between the two countries.
In 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao on a state visit to attend the Golden Jubilee Commemoration of the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, West Java, in 2005 also signed a joint declaration on this strategic partnership.
"The strategic partnership shall be a non-aligned and non-exclusive relationship aimed at promoting peace, stability and prosperity of the two countries and its people," Hu said.
China and Indonesia were important partners for cooperation. As two major developing countries, they should develop a strategic perspective in addressing the long-term interests and take bilateral relations to a new level to the benefit of the two countries and peoples as well as to make new contributions to solidarity and cooperation among the developing countries and to peace and development of mankind, he said.
The strategic partnership would conform to principles set out in the UN Charter, the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, the Ten Principles of the Asian-African Conference, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, and other universally recognized norms of international law, said the joint declaration.
The strategic partnership will be an important pillar in strengthening China-ASEAN strategic partnership as well as a critical component of South-South cooperation among developing countries.
"The strategic partnership shall provide a basis for close coordination and cooperation in regional, inter-regional, and international fora and organizations with a view to building comprehensive and mutually beneficial ties in meeting the challenges of the new millennium and strengthening regional and international peace, stability and prosperity," a clause in the joint declaration said.
The strategic partnership would also focus on strengthening political and security cooperation, deepening economic and development cooperation, enhancing socio-cultural cooperation, and expanding non-governmental exchanges, it added.
In addition, the two heads of state also agreed to increase regular high-level bilateral exchanges and interactions by establishing a dialogue mechanism at the State Councillor/Coordinating Minister level for greater relations and cooperation between China and Indonesia.
"China supports Indonesia in its efforts to maintain national unity and territorial integrity and Indonesia reiterates its continuing adherence to the one China policy and its recognition that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing all of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and supports the process of peaceful reunification of China," said the joint declaration. pursuit of the ASEAN Community as well as the role of China in sustaining the efforts of ASEAN through programs such as BIMP-EAGA.
Hu and Yudhoyono agreed to enhance the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea as a means to make the South China Sea a platform for cooperation and a bridge of friendship in addition to strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, said the joint declaration. ***3***
