WALHI URGES US TO SHOW FIRM STANCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Jakarta, Dec 2 (ANTARA)- The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) has called on the United States to show a firm stance on the impact of climate change at the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Walhi activists and members of other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) made the call in a demonstration outside the United States Embassy here on Wednesday (Dec.2).

The NGOs that had joined Walhi in the action were among others the Indonesia Peasant Union (SPI), Anti-Debt Coalition (KAU) and the Study Ring-Action for Indonesian Democracy (LS-ADI).

The demonstrators rode on bicycles from the "Tugu Tani" (Peasnts' Monument) in the Menteng area to the American Embassy on Jalan Merdeka Selatan to the accompaniment of Tanjidor (traditional native Jakarta) music.

The action coordinator, M Arif, in his oration said the United States can provide relevant solutions to the impact of climate change in the world body's convention which will take place in Copenhagen and be attended by representatives of many countries' leaders.

The reason is the United States as the largest emission-causing country is responsible for more than 35 percent of the world total greenhouse gas emissions, Arif said.

However, until now, the world is still not willing to take the drastic step of reducing their emissions by 40 percent.

The U.S. only sets a very small target or 16 percent from current emission levels compared to other parties involved.

The U.S. reluctance is feared to trigger other countries to reduce their emissions targets and hinder the achievement of concrete measures of the Copenhagen negotiations, he cited.

"We, therefore, from the peasant movement, environmental activists, students urged the United States to be responsible for the contamination of greenhouse gases made so far, by taking drastic steps to reduce domestic emissions for 40 percent by 2020," he added. ***3***
