S. Korea restarts poultry exports to Japan

SEOUL, Dec. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has restarted fresh poultry exports to
Japan after being shut out of the market following the 2006 bird flu outbreak,
the government said Wednesday.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said all properly
processed chicken and duck meat can be shipped to Japan without restrictions.
"The new rules are for all meat butchered and processed from Wednesday onwards,"
an official said, adding the measures should help local poultry farmers.
Tokyo had halted all quarantine inspections in November 2006 after Seoul reported
an outbreak of a virulent and contagious strain of bird flu.
South Korea exported 349 tons of fresh chicken and 358 tons of duck meat in 2006.
