KUPANG AIRPORT STILL CLOSED TO ALL FLIGHTS
Kupang, Indonesia, Dec 3 (ANTARA) - Kupang's El Tari airport in East Nusa Tenggara is still closed to all flights as of Thursday after a Merpati Air plane made an emergency landing there Wednesday night.
El Tari Airport Duty Manager Zaenal Ismail said here on Thursday morning that the Merpati ill-fated plane was still blocking the runway.
Therefore he said the airport had been closed tor all flights since early Thursday morning until after the Merpati plane remove from the runway.
Luckily all 95 passengers and crew of the Merpati Airlines plane flight MZ 5840 were unharmed after the emergency landing.
The ill-fated Fokker 100 flying from Ujung Pandang to Kupang was forced to make an emergency landing at El Tari airport because of a technical problem of its landing gears.
Carrying 95 passengers including five infants, the plane first circled the city of Kupang at least ten times before the pilot decided to make the emergency landing at 10:15 p.m.
"We all panicked after the pilot told us the aircraft would have to make an emergency landing because its rear wheels had developed a problem," Mariani Karangan, one of the passengers, said.
A similar incident also happened last Tuesday, November 24, 2009, when a Batavia Air Boeing 737-400, flight number FLT 7P-711, made an emergency landing at El Tari airport.
The ill-fated plane with hundreds of passengers was flying from Jakarta to Kupang when it had to make an emergency landing at El Tari airport after its rear wheels had developed a problem.
The passengers of the ill-fated Batavia Air plane included a number of NTT provincial administration officials such as Yos Aman Mamulak, Paulus Tadung, and Niki Uly. ***
