KADIN MEMBERS ADVISED TO PREPARE FOR FTA'S IMPACT
Jakarta, Dec 3 (ANTARA) - MS Hidayat, chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has called on the organization`s members to prepare themselves for the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) next month.
"We must be alert to the possible impact of the implementation of the FTA," Hidayat said when opening a Kadin national leadership conference here on Thursday.
He said businessmen who had joined the organization had to participate in monitoring the implementation of the FTA as of January 1, 2010 among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and between Asean and China.
He said what should be monitored was the impact of FTA`s implementation on the continuity of businesses in the country.
He also called on businessmen to be ready to anticipate the impact of the FTA by among other things solving technical barrier problems.
Meanwhile, With regard to the Asean-China FTA, the chairman of the Association of Indonesian Businessmen (Apindo), Sofyan Wanandi, said that all countries were afraid to compete with China right now.
"We are all afraid. Even Obama (the US president) is. Protection will be the last resort to avoid losing. This is normal because even the US protects its tire industry," he said.
He said China had invested US$500 billion to develop its infrastructure and was restructuring its industries to make them more efficient.
"I am scared to know all this. Clearly we will lose in the competition with them," he said.
He said the government had to start thinking about the future by changing the economic structure from being exporter of raw materials to finished products.
"So we must not again export raw materials. We must not export gas, oil or cacao but must produce their derivatives so that people will have jobs," he said.
He said the government could protect domestic industry through incentive and disincentive policies. He said Indonesia would not be able to compete in manufacturing with China and India right now.
