An all-religion prayer meeting was also held at
Barkatullah Bhavan with Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister
of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, where Bhopal is
located, and Urban Development Minister Babulal Gaur in
attendance.

In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar said the survivors
of the gas tragedy are still suffering from the ill-effects of
the gas that leaked from the Union Carbide Plant at Bhopal.
"Let us on this occasion express our solidarity with the
victims of this terrible tragedy and reiterate our resolve to
make it a better place for the coming generations," Kumar
said.
Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh in a statement
Wednesday described Bhopal as a tragedy that "still gnaws at
our collective conscience". Singh also pledged to continue
efforts to tackle the issues of drinking water and site
decontamination.
A candle-lit vigil was held by hundreds of mourners to
mark the moment, soon after midnight, when the toxic gas
leaked from a tank at the factory.
The Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan took out
a rally of the gas victims from Yaadgar-E-Shahjahani Park to
the Union Carbide Factory opposite Jai Prakash Nagar.
The Bhopal Group for Information and Action also took
out a rally to the Union Carbide Factory from the Bharat
Talkies.
The culmination of the two rallies was marked by burning
of effigies of Warren Anderson, who was the Chief Executive
Officer of the Union Carbide at the time of the disaster in
December 1984.
Organisations of the victims have been demanding for a
long time that Anderson should be extradited from USA so
that he can be tried before Indian courts.
At the seven hospitals working for the gas victims,
patients were given gifts including fruits and medicines on
the occasion. PTI AS
