MT MERAPI MUSEUM ATTRACTS 2,500 TOURISTS SINCE OPENING
Sleman, Yogyakarta, Dec 4 (ANTARA) - Since its opening to the public last October 10, the Mount Merapi Museum (MGM) has been visited by at least 2,500 domestic and foreign tourists, a local tourism official said.
"It means the MGM which is open every Saturday, Sunday and national holiday was visited by an average of more than 1,250 tourists per day," Dwi Supriyanto, head of Sleman district's culture and tourism office, said here on Friday.
The Mount Merapi Museum is located at Banteng hamlet, Pakem sub-district in Sleman, Yogyakarta.
Dwi Supriyatno said the public or tourists could visit the museum free of charge until the end of December this year.
"Because of the free entry, the common people and tourists are expected to make use of this rare opportunity to visit the museum," Dwi Supriyatno said.
He called on parents and teachers to bring along their children and students when visiting the museum which showed volcanic potentials around the world, especially in Indonesia.
"More specifically, it shows the history of Mount Merapi as the most active volcano in the world," Dwi Supriyatno said, adding that MGM was a positive education facility for school and university students who would like to know more about volcanoes.
He said the museum is open every Saturday, Sunday, and national holiday from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon with free entry but starting January next year visitors will have to pay for entry tickets.
