FIRST LADY: WOMEN'S POLITICAL ROLE INCREASING
Jakarta, Dec 4 (ANTARA) - First Lady Ani Yudhoyono said the unprecedented number of women currently seated in the central and regional parliaments was proof that the role of Indonesian women in the nation's political life was increasing.
Speaking at a blood donating activity to mark Mother's Day 2009 on Friday, the first lady said women's political role in general had significantly increased in the life of the community, state, and nation.
"We have to be thankful for the fact that a significant number of women have won seats in the parliament both at central and regional levels," First Lady Ani Yudhoyono said.
She pointed out that 2009 was a momentous year for Indonesia because of the peaceful and democratic legislative and presidential elections which had produced legitimate leaders.
"What the country has achieved this year is inseparable from the active role of Indonesian women," the first lady said.
The women representatives, according to the first lady, were not only in the political field but also in humanitarian field, because the women were frequently in the front line to struggle for common prosperity and welfare.
"Indonesian women in fact have outstanding solidarity and concern in sharing and helping each other who are in need," she said.
The first lady said the commemoration of Mother's Day 2009 was a momentous event to remember and respect the struggle of Indonesian women to regain and maintain national independence.
"Let us reminisce about the women's struggle and commitment for the first time on December 22, 1928 in Yogyakarta," the first lady said.
