ECONOMY TO GROW AT LEAST 4.4 PCT : BAPPENAS

Jakarta, Dec 4 (ANTARA) - The director of macro-planning of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Bambang Prijambodo, said he believed the country's economy would grow minimally by 4.4 percent this year.

"If no economic upheaval happens we believe the economy will grow above 4.4 percent. We believe it will be between 4.4 percent and 4.5 percent," he said here on Friday.

He said a higher-than-expected growth was expected to happen in the fourth quarter. He said the tendency had shown that the economy would grow faster than expected.

"We believe in the fourth quarter this year the growth would be higher than 4.4 percent as Bank Indonesia has predicted," he said.

He said the expected growth which would be higher than the initial target of 4.3 percent would be driven by traditional sector namely private consumption but also global economic improvement.

He said the improving global economy helped lift the country's economy especially seen from the export side. He said in the fourth quarter the country's exports were expected to continue to rise higher than in the previous quarter.

"The world's economy is improving, to Asian economies particularly India and China that grew respectively at 7.9 percent and 8.9 percent in the third quarters. Asia seems to continue to thrive faster than other regions and would trigger an improvement in our export performance," he said.

He said although exports would be better in 2009 in all they would remain negative compared to last year's. "Although they will be negative they will certainly be better than they were predicted before," he said.

He said investment would also increase but would not as yet be maximal because the world's economy was still fragile.

He said investment was predicted to continue to improve and would grow positively above four percent in the fourth quarter this year.

The National Bureau of Statistics recorded the country's economy grew 4.23 percent in the third quarter. In the first quarter it grew 4.45 percent but dropped in the second quarter to 4.04 percent and rose again to 4.2 percent.
