S. Korea to restrict foreign vessels' passage near maritime installations

SEOUL, Dec. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea said Tuesday that it plans to restrict the passage and approach of foreign ships near its sea-based installations, a move aimed at strengthening the nation's overall maritime jurisdiction.

The government earlier endorsed a bill under which the nation could designate
protective zones around its maritime installations such as ocean research
stations so that foreign ships cannot approach there without getting prior
permission, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
The bill will be submitted to parliament within the month for approval, it said.
Under the bill, foreign vessels should also get permits from the government when
they seek to anchor in the nation's territorial water.
In addition, the government will be able to order the removal of obstacles and
waste left by foreign vessels both in its territorial waters and in its exclusive
economic zone, the ministry said.
