TAIWANESE INVESTORS PLANNING TO RELOCATE THEIR BUSINESS TO INDONESIA
Bogor, Dec 8 (ANTARA)-- A Taiwanese investor is making preparations to relocate its business from China to Indonesia as the situation in the country has become more conducive, a Taiwanese foreign ministry official said.
"Many Taiwanese businesses who have invested in building factories in China had relocated their businesses to other countries in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia," Owen Chyi-Wang Hsieh, director general in charge of home assignments at the Department of Southeast Asia and Pacific Affairs, Taiwanese foreign ministry, said in Bogor Tuesday.
Addressing an Indonesia-Taiwan dialogue held by the Habibie Center and the Taiwan Trade and Economic Office(TETO), Hsieh said the Taiwanese businessmen had made the decision because of increasing wages and the increasingly tighter labor law in China, as well as the tight competition with the Chinese people.
Besides the improved situation, he said many Taiwanese businessmen had moved their operations to Indonesia as costs in Taiwan had been increasing.
Program and Research Director at the Habibie Center Prof. Dr. Dewi Furtuna Anwar said while without diplomatic relations with Indonesia, Taiwan is a tough economic power in the Asia and Pacific region.
"Taiwan is one of the biggest investors in Indonesia, and has received more than 130,000 workers from Indonesia," Dewi said. Taiwan has also become a big source of tourists for Indonesia, she added.
She said that Indonesia should be rather flexible in applying the One China Policy.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS), Taiwan`s investment in Indonesia reached 3.5 billion US dollars, especially in the business of textile, footwear, electronic products, metal goods, furniture and banking.
Taiwan is the 8th biggest foreign investor in Indonesia, and the 3rd biggest in Asia after Singapore and Japan.
Last year Taiwan`s exports to Indonesia reached 3.5 billion US dollars, and its imports from Indonesia 7.3 billion US dollars. Indonesia enjoyed a surplus of 3.8 billion US dollars thanks to Taiwan`s oil and gas imports from Indonesia.
Taiwan`s companies have been actively relocating their businesses to Indonesia. Some 7,000 Taiwanese businesspeople and technicians are conducting business or working in Indonesia, because they are attracted by Indonesia`s natural resources and domestic market potential of more than 100 million people.
Hsieh also believed that Indonesia had undergone drastic changes in recent times, and is member of G-20. He believed that the Indonesian economy will experience a booming in a not too distant future, and that the economic relations between the two nations will increase.
He has also predicted that some of the leading information and communications technology industries of Taiwan may transfer their manufacturing work to Indonesian partners some time in the future.
Standing Committee chief of the Food, Drinks and Tobacco Industry of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Thomas Darmawan said that Indonesia needs to grab Taiwan`s business transfer from China by building a special economic estate for Taiwanese businesspeople.
"Taiwanese businesspeople have a characteristic trait such as getting together and can easily adapt with local conditions," Thomas said.
In anticipating that, he said a certification would be necessary of the workers which will be provided for Taiwanese companies including ICT and bio-tecknology industries.
Indonesian companies may also use the opportunities in canning and packing industries if similar companies from Taiwan have stopped operating in China and relocated their operations to Indonesia. ***2***
