Canon Korea refunding customers over ad dispute
SEOUL, Dec. 8 (Yonhap) -- Canon Korea Consumer Imaging Inc., the South Korean unit of Canon Inc., said Tuesday it is refunding buyers of its "EOS 7D" digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera in response to accusations of false advertising.
The commercial had stated earlier that the digital camera's viewfinder has
100-percent coverage, resulting in pictures that are exactly the same as they
appear on the camera's monitor.
But a dispute erupted in Japan, with customers claiming the viewfinder covers
only 97 percent of the photograph it makes, prompting Canon Korea to revise its
ads to "around" 100 percent coverage.
The company said its commercial was not inaccurate, citing internal rules that
permit errors in measurement of 1 percent.
But regardless of the camera's viewfinder coverage, Canon Korea is offering
refunds to 7D camera buyers.
"The product is not flawed," a Canon Korea official said. "But we are giving
refunds to customers who want it."
