NGO CRITICIZES COPENHAGEN SUMMIT'S HOST FOR IGNORING DEVELOPING NATIONS

Jakarta, Dec. 9 (ANTARA) - A number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have criticized the host of the Copenhagen Climate Summit for preparing a `Copenhagen Accord` draft before hearing the developing countries` views at the meeting.

"The Copenhagen Accord draft systematically ignores the interest of developing countries on key issues, and bluntly pictures only the position of Denmark and other industrialized nations," Luluk Uliyah, activist of The Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam), said in an e-mail message here on Wednesday.

The Climate Justice Now (CJN), an international civil society group engaged in climate change issues, and the Indonesian Civil Society Forum for Climate Justice (CSF) had sent a petition to protest the Danish government as the host and the president of the 15th Plenary Session of the Convention of Parties (COP 15) of the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC) being held in Copenhagen, from December 7 to 18, 2009.

The open letter was addressed to Lars Rasmussen, the prime minister of Denmark.

The early drafting of the Copenhagen Accord showed that industrialized countries had started to manipulate the negotiation process by drafting premature conclusions, she said.

"The Indonesian delegation should have protested the COP 15 leadership which has threatened developing states like Indonesia. We will be ignored in the negotiations," Giorgio B, CSF coordinator, said.

CJN has urged the COP 15 president to be fair and neutral because all processes of negotiations must be fair, transparent and ensure participation of all countries, he said.
