PRESIDENT OPENS DEFENSE INDUSTRY REVITALIZATION WORKSHOP

Jakarta, Dec 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened a national workshop on defense industry revitalization at the State Palace here on Wednesday.

Organized by the Defense Ministry, the workshop is intended to develop ideas for the formulation of government regulations and a blueprint for transactions between consumers and producers of defense goods in the next five-year period.

At the workshop, defense industry stakeholders , especially consumers and producers, were expected to come up with productive and effective ideas.

The workshop was also expected to yield ideas on the regulation of the defense industry and the provision of guarantees for the extension of loans to the industry.

The workshop is being attended by 258 participants from the Defense Ministry, the National Defense Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), related state institutions, House of Representatives (DPR) members, and representatives of the banking and industrial communities.

President Yudhoyono at the opening ceremony of the workshop at the State Palace gave directives or guidelines on the strategy to revitalize the domestic defense industry.

The workshop was organized as the peak event of a series of meetings to discuss the industry`s revitalization.

After opening the workshop, President Yudhoyono was scheduled to head to Halim Perdanakusuma airport at 11:30 a.m. for a trip to Denpasar, Bali, to attend Bali Democracy Forum II from December 10-11, 2009.

The Bali Democracy Forum II among Asian countries will be attended by Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Timor Leste Prime Minister Jose Ramos Horta, while the United States government would be represented by a delegation of observers.

Foreign ministers or ministerial-level officials and delegations from some 29 Asian countries will also attend the Bali Democracy Forum.

In addition, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Tajikistan had confirmed their plans to take part in the forum.

Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Portugal would also send observer delegations.
