Seoul to extradite Japanese suspected of tax evasion

SEOUL, Dec. 9 (Yonhap) -- Seoul will extradite a Japanese national who fled to South Korea after being charged with evading corporate taxes worth 1.6 billion yen (US$18 million) in his home country, prosecutors here said Wednesday.

The suspect, whose name was withheld, had been under investigation by prosecutors
in Japan on suspicion of evading taxes by under-evaluating the income of his
securities company for a year from May 2007, according to Seoul's Central
District Prosecutors Office.
South Korean investigators made the arrest in Daegu, 302 kilometers south of
Seoul, on Tuesday after the government received a request from Tokyo for the
suspect's extradition in November, it said.
The suspect will be returned to Japan after the Seoul High Court approves his
extradition and Justice Minister makes the final decision.
