RI POTENTIAL FOR CANADIAN INVESTMENT

Yogyakarta, 9/12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is a potential market for Canada for investment in many sectors, Political and Public Affairs Counselor of the Canadian embassy in Jakarta Tricia MacDonald said.

"Therefore many Canadian companies have opened their branch offices in Indonesia," he said after delivering a lecture at the Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMY) here Wednesday.

He said Canada and Indonesia are working together in boosting their economic competitiveness and businesses, especially in the fields of infrastructure, defense and aviation, natural oil and gas, mining, information technology and communications, and agricultural-based foodstuffs.

Besides close economic relations, he said, Canada and Indonesia were also involved in regular consultations on various fields including basic human rights protection, government affairs and pluralism, economic development, reduction of susceptibility to poverty, and foreign policy planning.

"Academic exchange between several private universities in the two countries constitutes an important element in bilateral relations since the 50s. Partnership between Indonesia and Canada had been established in various multilateral organizations like ASEAN, APEC, ASEAN Regional Forums, and the World Trade Organization," he said.

He also said Canada and Indonesia also sat together in the United Nations Human Rights Council. The membership was proof of a joint commitment of the two countries to multilateral cooperation, especially in the Asia Pacific region.

In the meantime, professor in international relations of UMY Ratih Herningtyas said the visit by the Canadian embassy official would serve as a good and effective cooperation portal of the two sides in the coming years. ***2***
