Daewoo International close to winning $1.3 bln order for power plant in Kenya

SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Yonhap) -- Daewoo International Corp., a South Korean trading
company, said Thursday that it has been selected as the preferred bidder for a
US$1.3-billion coal-fired power plant project in Kenya.

Kenya Electricity Generation Co., the nation's biggest power producer, placed the
project for the plant with a capacity of up to 600 megawatts in the southeastern
port city of Mombasa, according to Daewoo International.
Daewoo International, if it wins the deal, would build the plant with the
state-run Kenya power generator and win the rights to operate the plant.
According to Daewoo International, Kenya which has been traditionally relying on
hydropower, is seeking to build more power plants with the aim of generating
1,500 megawatts by 2019.
The African country suffered droughts over the past few years.
Daewoo International, a former unit of the now-defunct Daewoo Group, is now up
for sale. Its creditors are seeking to sell the company within next year.
Daewoo International, now focused mainly on energy development, is conducting
massive gas and oil field development projects, including one in Myanmar.
