Gov`t to spend 2.17 tln won on electronic infrastructure upgrades

SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Yonhap) -- The government plans to spend 2.17 trillion won
(US$1.86 billion) next year to update its public sector electronic
infrastructure, government officials said Thursday.
The sum represents a 7.4 percent gain from this year and is part of a broader
move to create a paperless, e-government that can streamline the country's
overall policymaking process, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.
The measure, if approved by parliament, is aimed at buying new hardware and
software for 1,082 central and regional government agencies and state-run
corporations and supporting research and development (R&D) activities.
Of the total, 377.7 billion won will be spent on hardware purchases, with 142.4
billion won to be used to acquire software programs. The rest of the money will
be allocated for software R&D support.
The ministry said it plans to use the bulk of the money in the first half of next
year as part of its efforts to spur economic growth.
