OBSERVER PREDICTS ECONOMY TO GROW MINIMALLY 5.4 PERCENT

Jakarta, Dec 10 (ANTARA) - An economic observer predicted here on Thursday Indonesia`s economy could grow 5.4 percent next year.

"My prediction is minimally 5.4 percent and with a litte more hardwork such as through the implementation of a national single window, 24-hour service at Tanjungpriok port to increase productivity, God willing, a 6.0 percent growth will be on hand," Faisal Basri, an economist from state University of Indonesia said in a seminar at LKBN ANTARA.

He said Indonesia`s economic growth must reach around 6.0 percent next year adding a 5.5 percent growth will impress unwillingness to work hard.

He said the manufacturing sector as a contributor to the growth needed to be given serious attention so that it could further grow in 2010.

"It is impossible for the economy to be able to grow well without manufacturing growth. Therefore the sector which now only grows 1.3 percent a year must be made to grow minimally 3.5 to 4.0 percent," he said.

He said investment also had to be cared for. The estimated need of around Rp2,000 trillion investment for the next five years is actually for 2010 only, he said.

"According to me for the next five years the investment need will be around Rp2.900 trillion and of the total Rp400 trillion will come from banking, around Rp500 trillion from abroad and the rest from the capital market and foreign direct investment," he said.

He said compared to other countries like China and India Indonesia had actually been left far behind. This happened because Indonesia`s exports were mainly raw material commodities while those countries` exports had mostly been manufacturing products.
