MINISTRY TO DRAFT NEW LAW TO IMPROVE TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE ON BIO-RESOURCES
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry will draft a new law next year which is aimed at strengthening the management and implementation of traditional knowledge on biological resources.
Its Minister Douglas Uggah Embas said the law was aimed at protecting the
intellectual property rights on traditional knowledge in line with the United
Nations Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) guidelines.
"In this context, the government will intensify its efforts to enhance
public awareness on the importance of traditional knowledge on biological
resources, besides ensuring that its heritage is well preserved," he said at the
opening of national seminar on Traditional Knowledge On Biodiversity in
Malaysia, here Thursday.
His speech text was read by Deputy Minister Joseph Kurup.
