The study disapproves the theories, based on fossil
studies, that one wave of human population directly went to
East Asian countries from Africa.
"The study establishes the fact that the ancestors of
Asian countries are from India. It disapproves the theory
based on fossil data," Brahmachari said.
Scientists believe the first human originated in
Africa, mostly South Africa, about 1.3 lakh years ago. Then a
population wave came to India through the coastal route.
Later, some of them migrated to Thailand, and also to
south to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Thereafter,
one or several groups moved to north and formed various
populations, now referred to as Austronesian.
The study is co-authored by CSIR scientists at the
Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, collaborating
with more than 80 scientists from HUGO, Chauhan said.
The findings establish a single initial entry of
modern humans into the continent of Asia, instead of multiple
flows. The work shows that India represents a microcosm of
Asia's genetic diversity.
As this study establishes commonality in genetic
diversity between the population in India and the East Asian
countries, "any clinical trial (of drugs) in India could work
for the population in these Asian countries", Brahmachari
said. PTI BKM
