RI TO POSTPONE PARTICIPATION IN ASEAN "OPEN-SKY" POLICY

Jakarta, Dec 12 (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Freddy Numberi has confirmed Indonesia will ask for a postponment of its full participation in the planned "open-sky" policy in the Asean region.

"We have asked for a postponement of at least six months and discuss it at the next transportation ministers' meeting," he said here on Saturday during an evaluation of the transportation ministry's performance.

He made the statement when referring to the results of a two-day meeting of transportation ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in Hanoi, Vietnam, that ended on Friday.

He said he made the decision because Indonesia needed good preparations before entering the liberalization stage in passenger and goods transportation by air in Asean as of 2015.

"If we are not ready it will be them who will be running our national aviation services," he said.

He said the preparations were needed not only with regard to regulations but also conditions and number of international airports in the country as well as national airline operators.

"Singapore only has one airport, Malaysia six but we have 26 international airports. If they are all opened, we will be the loser," he said.

Freddy said in cooperating with other countries the national interest must be given priority.

"They seem to understand it and existing regulations in other countries indeed also have to be respected," he said.

The director general of air transportation, Herry Bakti, meanwhile said the re-discussion of the Asean open air sky policy would probably be done in April 2010 in concurrent with the Asean summit in Hanoi or during the Asean ministerial-level meeting in November 2010 in Brunei Darussalam.

Before the meeting, he said, the government would likely issue a ministerial decree regarding the number of airports ready for the implementation of the open sky policy. "Perhaps three or five airports," he said.***
