Switzerland`s Cavigelli wins snowboard World Cup in Seoul

SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Yonhap) -- Switzerland's Gian-Luca Cavigelli took gold in the
snowboarding World Cup competition in Seoul on Sunday, his first time winning the
title.
The Swiss snowboarder, who has been in second place in the Big Air World Cup
standings, narrowed the gap on frontrunner Stefan Gimpl from Austria to 700
points after earning the maximum 1,000 points for the win.
Gimpl leads the total score for the 2009-2010 season with 3,800 points, followed
Cavigelli with 3,100 points.
Big Air competitions are contests where riders perform tricks after launching off
a jump pad. Competitors perform tricks in the air, aiming to attain sizable
height and distance, all while securing a clean landing.
Cavigelli pulled a backside 1080 in his first run and a backside double cork 1080
on his second run.
Gimpl, the winner of the previous two World Cups in Stockholm and London barely
made it to the finals after ranking 10th place in the preliminary contest.
The South Korean capital was the first city in Asia to host the FIS
(International Ski Federation) Snowboard World Cup Competition.
