HATTA RAJASA DECLARES READINESS TO RUN FOR PAN CHAIRMANSHIP

Jakarta, Dec 14 (ANTARA) - National Mandate Party (PAN) figure M. Hatta Rajasa has declared his readiness to run in the election of a new party leader for the 2010-2015 period.

Speaking at a meeting with executives of the party's provincial and district branches in Java here Monday night , he said "with full awarenes of the consequences, and with Allah's blessings and the support of all of you, I hereby agree to be a candidate for the party chair for the 2010-2015 period."
In his address at the meeting, Rajasa, who is also coordinating minister for economic affairs in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's second cabinet, mentioned the name of senior PAN leader and founder Amien Rais several times but the latter was not present.

PAN's present chairman is Sutrisno Bachir but the party is scheduled to hold a leadership election at its congress on January 8-10, 2010 in Batam.

He said PAN's senior figures, including Amien Rais, had intended PAN to be a reform-minded party and this was why PAN was characterized by a constantly critical attidude and a desire to offer solutions to the nation's problems.

"We decided to coalesce with and support the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration but let me remind you this does not mean discarding our party's critical character," he said.

Rajasa told reporters after the meeting, he would not nominate himself for the party's top post but was expecting representatives of the party's provincial and district branches to do so.

"I will not nominate myself, let others in the party do it. And I also would welcome a healthy competition for the party chair for the sake of good political education to the party rank and file, and enhancement of the democratic spirit in the party," Rajasa said before leaving the Borobudur Hotel where the meeting took place.
