BRITISH FUND FOR FOREST MANAGEMENT IN PAPUA

Jayapura, Dec 14 (ANTARA) - A hundred percent of the fund which is used in making Special Regional Regulation No 21/2009 on forest management in Papua came from the British government, a local official has said.

The head of Papua's Provincial Forestry Office, Ir.Marthen Kayoi said here recently that foreign aid, particularly from Britain for forest management in Papua reflected international attention to the province's forests as the world's lungs.

However, Marthen did not mention the amount of the fund, but he said that Papua's forests now became world attention in terms of its contribution to the reducing carbon emissions.

He pointed out that the British fund also indicated a big attention to Papua's forests and maintain local wisdom and an affirmative action to empower Papuans to develop regulations on forest management.

"There is a difficulty in the bureaucratic system to get some fund. The foreign fund helps us perform our operations," he said.

He urged all sides concerned to take an active role in Papua forest management.

"It means we need advise, suggestions and criticism from all sides in the management of Papua forests," he said.

Based on the Papua Forestry Office's data, of the 31.5 million hectares of forested land in Papua, only 23 to 24 million hectares were left.

"The question is, whether our forests will survive or decrease in the next ten years. This is hard work for all of us," said Marthen Kayoi. ***3***
