ANSHOR TO HELP ENSURE SECURITY DURING X'MAS IN N SULAWESI

Manado, Dec 15 (ANTARA) - The Muslim Anshor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) in North Sulawesi province has expressed readiness to help maintain security in the region during the Christmas holidays.

"Thousands of GP Ansor cadres will be deployed in a number of areas in North Sulawesi to ensure Christmas security and order," GP Ansor spokesman Benny Rhamdani said here on Tuesday.

Benny said the people of different faiths in North Sulawesi remained co-existing in peace and harmony because of their common commitment to maintaining inter-religious tolerance in the province.

He said problems which lead to national instability and disintegration should be avoided because Indonesia is a law-abiding country that guarantees freedom of worship.

Therefore, Benny added, GP Ansor cadres were called to build a sense of togetherness and tolerance among the people of different beliefs in North Sulawesi.

"Our efforts to help maintain security during Christmas here is to reciprocate our Christian brothers who did the same thing for us during the Idul Fitri festivities last September," Benny said.

Meanwhile, Seventh Day Adventist Church spokesman Andry Sengkey said the positive support from the cadres of GP Ansor to ensure Christmas security was highly appreciated.

Sengkey said the commitment from the Ansor Youth Movement to help ensure security on the Christmas holidays should be highly appreciated because a sense of security and order was needed during the Christian event.

In addition, Muslims in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province have also expressed readiness to do the same on Christmas Day on December 25, 2009.

"We are ready to support Christmas and to ensure its security in Kupang," NTT Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) spokesman Jamaludin Ahmad said in Kupang over the weekend.

Jamaludin said Muslims in NTT would help security personnel regulate traffic or guard the houses of worship where Christians were observing Christmas services.

"During Christmas last year members of the Anshor Youth Movement (GP Anshor) and Muslim Students Association (HMI) hit to the streets to help the police regulate traffic, and we are going to do the same this year," Jamaludin said.
