REGIONAL AUTONOMY NOT FOR NEW STATE
Jakarta, Dec 15 (ANTARA) - The implementation of regional autonomy (Otda) to improve people's welfare is not intended for a new state, Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi said here on Tuesday.
"Regional autonomy is not intended to create a new state but it is an effort to improve the welfare of the people in their respective regions," Gamawan Fauzi said at a function to open Financial Coordination Meeting to discuss the provision of regional election funds.
At the meeting, the home affairs minister was accompanied by Regional Financial Administration Management (BAKD) Director Timbul Pudjianto.
On the occasion Gamawan said that 244 regional elections would be organized in 2010 to elect governors, district heads, and mayors for more than 230 new regional autonomies which had been formed since 1998.
"It means that an average of 23 new regions are formed every year," said the former West Sumatra governor who used to be a district head for two terms.
Gamawan said regional elections in various provinces across the country became the focus of international attention because Indonesia has been considered the most democratic country in the world.
"The world will keep asking whether the regional elections had been held smoothly, orderly, and democratically," the home affairs minister told district heads and mayors attending the one-day meeting.
