Samsung Group conducts management reshuffle
SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Group, South Korea's largest business
conglomerate, said Wednesday that it promoted a total of 380 executives at
numerous affiliates, including Samsung Electronics Co., as part of an annual
management reshuffle.
The reshuffle came a day after Samsung Electronics, Asia's largest electronics
company, named Lee Jae-yong, the only son of former Samsung Group chairman Lee
Kun-hee, to the key post of chief operating officer, cementing the junior Lee's
status as heir to the group.
Also on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics appointed Chi Gee-sung, head of the
company's consumer electronics and mobile-phone divisions, as chief executive
officer. The current CEO Lee Yoon-woo will remain as chairman of the company's
board.
"The large-scale promotion reflects the outstanding business performances by
affiliates despite the global economic crisis," the group said in a statement.
Wednesday's reshuffle saw the youngest daughter of the senior Lee, Seo-hyun,
promoted to senior vice president of Cheil Industries Inc., the group's textile
arm.
While the senior Lee voluntarily gave up his chairmanship last year after he was
found guilty of involvement in a corruption case, there is little doubt that his
grip on the group remains undiminished.
