CHINA TO INCREASE INVESTMENT IN R`'S AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
Jakarta, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - Ahead of the implementation of the Asean-China Free Trade Area on January 1, 2010, the Chinese government on Wednesday pledged to increase its investment in the automotive sector in Indonesia.
"Bilateral relations between Indonesia and China will become closer with the implementation of the ACFTA. In the future, more Chinese companies such as Geely (an automotive company) will come to Indonesia," an economic and commercial consultant to the Chinese government, Fang Qui, said at the launching of the locally assembled Geely car here.
The relations between Indonesia and China have advanced rapidly. In 2008, the value of trade between the two countries reached US$31.5 billion.
Although the trade value is predicted to drop to US$27 billion this year he said the relations between the two countries would further develop not only in the trade sector but also in other investment sectors.
Through the automotive sector, he said, the two countries' economy would rise, moreover after the global crisis had reduced trade and triggered protectionism which would be a big challenge for the two countries.
He said however that China would strive to speed up its its investment in Indonesia as an anticipatory effort over the current situation. "This will benefit Indonesia because more workers will be employed," he said.
Regarding the car assembling by Geely Group in Indonesia, he said it was a step forward. "The completely knock down program is a progress with regard to the relations between Indonesia and China," he said.
He said the Chinese population reaching 1.3 billion is a big market for Indonesian products including automotive products. Chinese automotive sales in 2009 are predicted to reach 12 million units.
Vice President of Zhejian Geely Holding Group Co. Ltd., Jie Zhao, said the company would make Indonesia its base for car production for the Southeast Asian region, Australia and New Zealand.
He said he would immediately develop a new plant in Indonesia as soon as he found a partner in the country.
"For me it is important to have a partner in Indonesia not only with regard to production but also making marketing easier. We do not know much about the automotive market condition in Indonesia," he said.
The director general of transportation means and telecommunications and information industry, Budi Darmadi, said he hoped Geely would be able to realize its wish to make Indonesia its production base.
He also hoped the production of completely-knocked down cars using the assembling facility of PT Gaya Motor would serve as a transfer of knowledge for Indonesia and the Chinese automotive maker would also use more local components.***
