RI HANDS OVER ABDUCTION SUSPECT TO PHILIPPINES

Jakarta, Dec 17 (ANTARA) - Indonesia on Wednesday handed over a Filipino man involved in the abduction of a US citizen in the Pilippines to the Philippine embassy in Jakarta , police said.

The Filipino, named Basher Sulaiman Latif, was arrested by Indonesian police last November 19 after arriving at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta ineternational airport from Jordan and intending to continue his journey to the Philippines, National Police spokesman Insp Gen Nanan Soekarna said here Thursday.

After questioning him for some time and not finding any indication he had done something wrong in Indonesia, Indonesian police handed him over to the Philippine embassy in Jakarta on December 16 for further extradition to the United States.

Indonesian police apprehended Basher at the request of the US Federal Bureau of Investgation (FBI) because he was suspected of involvement in the abduction of US citizen Charles Walton in the Philippines in 1993.
