Rupee dips 21 paise against US dollar

Mumbai, Dec 17 (PTI) The rupee plunged to nearly six-week
low of 46.88/89 by losing 21 paise Thursday against the US
dollar amid the American currency rallying against major units
in Asia and Europe after the Federal Reserve's exuded
confidence about the US economy.

Forex dealers said dollar's surge to a three-month high
against its major rivals in the overseas markets after the Fed
at the end of a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday suggested
that economic activity has continued to pick up and that the
deterioration in the labor market is abating." It also decided
to stick with the current low interest rates.

The Federal Open Market Committee headed by chairman Ben
Bernanke in a statement said the recent data "suggests that
economic activity has continued to pick up and that the
deterioration in the labor market is abating."

In fairly active trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange
(Forex) market, the domestic unit resumed weak at 46.80/81
moved erratically. It concluded the day at 46.88/89, a fall of
0.45 per cent 0r 21 paise over its previous close of 46.67/68.

Dealers said that purchase of US dollar by importers to
meet their requirements weighed against the rupee sentiment.

Meanwhile, Indian benchmark Sensex on BSE ended lower by
a mere 18.52 points or 0.11 per cent. Asian indices too
displayed a weak trend at close.

Meanwhile, the global crude oil prices were trading below
USD 72 a barrel in London.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) fixed the reference rate
for the US dollar at Rs 46.78 per dollar and for the single
European currency at Rs 67.35 per euro.

Rupee premiums for the forward dollar ended lower on
fresh receivings by exporters.

The benchmark six-month forward dollar premium payable in
May ended weak at 58-60 paise from 63-65 paise on Wednesday
and far-forward maturing in November also closed down at 124-
126 paise from 133-135 paise previously.

In cross-currency trade, the domestic currency recovered
against the Pound and the Euro while reacted downwards against
the Japanese yen.

The rupee flared up against the pound to end at Rs
75.57/59 per pound from Wednesday's close of Rs 76.32/34 and
also hardened against the euro to Rs 67.29/31 per euro from Rs
67.99/68.01 previously.

It, however, fell back against the yen to Rs 52.16/18 per
100 yen from its last close of Rs 52.07/09. PTI VMP
