GERMAN CHANCELLOR TO VISIT INDONESIA

London, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is scheduled to visit Indonesia next year to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
Merkel announced her plan to visit Indonesia in a joint press conference with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the former's office this week, spokesman for the Indonesian Embassy in Berlin Agus Priono said in a statement on Friday.

In the press conference, the two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, trade and investment, among others, Priono said.

They also agreed to reactivate the Indonesia-Germany Economic Forum and intensify inter-religious and cultural dialogs as part of effort to bridge Islam and the West, he said.

Yudhoyono visited Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday on the third leg of his four-European nation tour. He visited Belgium and France on Monday. From Germany he flew to Copenhagen for the UN climate change talks on Thursday and Friday.

Yudhoyono's visit to Germany was considered of great significance because no exchange of the two countries' top leaders had happened since the then German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, visited Indonesia in 2003.

Indonesia and Germany, both members of the G-20, are considered to have performed well economically in 2009, especially in the face of the global financial crisis. They are also regarded as doing relatively well in regional and global terms.
