BUKITTINGI-LUBUK BASUNG ROAD CUT OFF BY LANDSLIDE

Padang, Dec 18 (ANTARA) - The Bukittinggi-Lubuk Basung road had been cut off in Lubuk Sao, Tanjung Raya subdistrict, Agam regency, Friday.

"Incessant heavy rain at 5.30 p.m local time had totally paralyzed the Bukittinggi-Lubuk Basung road, caused by a landslide in Lubuk Sao, Tanjung Raya subdistrict, Agam regency, West Sumatra", Tanjung Raya police chief First Inspector Yanisman said by cell phone in Padang Friday.

He also said that the landslide had produced a one kilometer long line of cars and buses from both sides.

The disaster started when it was heavily raining in the area at 5.30 p.m, and half an hour later the Salingka hill in many places 50 meters high overseeing Maninjau lake suddenly broke into a landslide, right in the same location of the landslide which occurred recently, he said.

He said the landslide reached 300 meters long and 2 meters thick.

A number of excavators and some other heavy equipment from the Bukittinggi and Agam public works office are busy trying to clear the debris from the road, but it was not an easy task because the road was going uphill, while it was still raining in the two areas.
