LAW MINISTER OBSERVES QUAKE-AFFECTED PENITENTIARY IN PADANG
Jakarta, Dec 19 (ANTARA) - Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar on Saturday visited the Muara state penitentiary in Padang, West Sumatra, that was severely damaged in a powerful earthquake last September 30.
The minister took a close look at the damaged parts of the penitentiary, including the collapsed concrete wall around the prison.
To prevent any of the inmates from escaping, a corrugated iron fence had been erected around the jail to serve as a temporary wall.
Patrialis also inspected the ruins of the prison's guard tower which had been toppled by the temblor. As a temporary replacement of the guard tower, the prison management had set up a wooden guard post at the spot.
On September 30, 2009, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked West Sumatra, especially Padang city and Padang Pariaman district, killing more than 1,000 people.
The minister said he had come to Padang to personally observe the physical conditions of Muara prison.
Meanwhile, Padang Mayor Fauzi Bahar said Muara prison was no longer tenable and therefore, he suggested it be relocated to another place on Padang city's outskirts.
The municipal government already had selected a few alternative locations to which the prison could be moved.
"This prison should be relocated to the outskirts of Padang," he said, adding that in the Tana Air area, there were about nine hectares of land that could be used to build a new prison.
Two other alernative locations lay at the border between Kuranji and Koto Tangah, and in the Bungus-Teluk Kabung area, he said, adding a new prison could be constructed in about 24 months' time.
Padang had a total of 2,366 prison inmates and 41 of them were to receive remissions on their jail terms on Christmas day with one of them to regain full freedom, Bahar said. *** 4 ***
